Suna Kıraç Library (SKL) Sustainability Committee is newly established in 2023 to lead the library activities pertaining to sustainability at large. The committee’s main objective is to raise awareness on sustainable issues by organizing various services, activities, and training sessions. SKL not only embraces the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also aligns and updates its services accordingly. SKL strives to provide equal access to high-quality educational information and activities within the framework of different SDGs. To further enhance our understanding of the SDGs and improve the quality of library services, the library staff, who possess diverse expertise and interests, have founded the SKL Sustainability Committee. The committee aims to raise awareness through organizing activities, training sessions, and developing services related to sustainability.

Furthermore, the SKL sustainability committee follows national and international initiatives and works to support these efforts. The committee members keep track of research, events, and other developments in the field of sustainability. Additionally, they contribute to the processes of developing and implementing policies and regulations related to sustainability. With a conscious commitment to our social and environmental responsibilities, the committee aims to promote progress in the field of sustainability and support Koç University’s sustainability policies and strategies.

Suna Kıraç Library Sustainability Committee Activities:

Book Swap Activities:

Suna Kıraç Library tries to adopt UN’s seventeen goals and implies & updates its services according to them. Book Swap is not something new to Suna Kıraç Library. However, now, we aim to continue this action more systematically and to reach more KU members.

In 2023, we participated in the “Trade Fair Event” held at the Koç University’s main campus with Suna Kıraç Library Book Swap stand. One of the first things that come to mind regarding book swaps is changing the books or a simple exchange process. Since consumption habits are one of the most critical behaviors that need attention and change for a more sustainable and green future, our aim while planning the book swap was to draw attention to responsible consumption.

Textbook Swap Activities:

SKL organized an exciting event as part of our sustainability initiatives – SKL Textbook Swap! We brought together students to exchange their textbooks. Participants not only lightened their backpacks but also contributed to reducing paper waste and promoting resourcefulness within our academic community. A total of 134 books have discovered new owners among 85 enthusiastic students, which resulted in the total value of distributed books being approximately $11,000. SKL Textbook Swap is not just about swapping books, it is a celebration of equality of education, a stand for the protection of our treasured natural resources, and a strong support system for those navigating through economic challenges. We received positive feedback from the participants.

SDG Related LibGuides:

Following our successful Textbook Swap campaign, we are taking SDG awareness to the next level by creating a dedicated Subject Guide. This comprehensive guide delves into each of the 17 SDGs, providing in-depth information and insights. Many libraries have guides introducing their collections and services related to sustainable issues. With this guide, we aim to not only offer comprehensive information on each of the 17 SDGs but also ensure that users can easily navigate and explore the content in a way that suits their interests and needs. Users can access fundamental knowledge about sustainability while exploring the specific details of each goal, allowing them to become well-informed about these crucial objectives.

Our commitment to sustainability and the SDGs does not stop at a single guide. We have also enhanced our existing subject guides to align with the SDGs by adding relevant tags and icons. When users who explore these guides, can also see which goal each guide serves and how it contributes to one or more of the 17 objectives.

International Activities:

The SKL Sustainability Committee aims to enhance its effectiveness not only in community and national initiatives but also on international platforms. In this context, various activities were conducted within the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Initially, IFLA’s article titled “What is a green library?” was translated by our committee and added to the IFLA website.

Subsequently, newsletter articles were prepared regarding the activities of the Environment, Sustainability, and Libraries Section affiliated with IFLA (IFLA ENSULIB). The first newsletter featured the introduction of the SKL Bookswap, while the second newsletter focused on raising awareness and highlighting sustainability goals by presenting topic guides prepared for this purpose.

Both articles are available on the IFLA ENSULIB webpage.
