As part of the 25th anniversary events of Koç University, the Sustainable Development Conference was held on March 26, in cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and the Business Administration Institute, with the support of the Corporate Governance Forum.
17 principles within the scope of sustainable development goals were discussed in four different sessions. First session “Environment, Energy and Climate” moderated by Esra Kent, the CSO of Siemens; second session “Health, Nutrition and Development” moderated by TV presenter and food writer Refika Birgül, third session moderated by Vehbi Koç Foundation Special Projects Manager Seçil Kınay. Equality, Education and Inclusion”, and the fourth session was held under the titles of “Women’s Leadership in a Fast-Changing World”, moderated by Ayşegül Dicle Aydın, Managing Partner of Heidrick & Struggles International Turkey.

Six pillars of a holistic approach to sustainability in universities are sustainable campus operations; sustainability in education and learning; social benefit; sustainability in research; campus community; and creating policies for sustainability. Sustainable Campus Working Group is focused on the first pillar, sustainable campus operations. Among water, energy, transportation, electricity, food and metal, paper was picked as the area for the group to work on as it’s one of the most important sources of consumption in a university and by that “Rethinking Paper in Campus” was formed as a body composed of faculty, employees and students.

The ‘Students Go Green’ project took place in the summer of 2014 and engaged a total of 60 university students from Koç University and four main Istanbul Universities (Sabancı University, Özyeğin University, Boğaziçi University and İstanbul Technical University) as well as University of Chicago and Indiana University to meet for a 3-day boot camp that involved sustainability training on campus, enabling dialogue between participants and academia and helping students realize the initiation of their own green projects on their respective campuses. The project idea was brought to KU by Yeşilist green platform. The project is funded by the U. S. Consulate General in Istanbul.
